About us

Mission

The Camden City Independent Living Center, INC. (CCILC) is a  non-profit, grass-roots organizations which is fully governed by a board of directs, of which fifty-one (51%) percent is disabled. CCILC exists to empower individuals with disabilities to take charge of their lives, to raise a family and participate fully in all educations vocational, and governmental and social activities in our society and their community.

The disabled community is made aware that CCILC is "their" center and that we will advocate and work with them to provide the programs and services needed in developing their abilities to lead purposeful lives. It is our mission whenever possible to seek the most productive and independent lifestyles as possible for the city of Camden's disabled residents.

CCILC is dedicated to providing Camden City Residents with disabilities the opportunity to actively participate in society.

Goals

CCILC is dedicated to providing Camden City Residents with disabilities the opportunity to actively participate in society. To work; to own a home; raise a family; and in general to participate to the fullest extent possible in day-to-day activities.

Our History (Mrs. C)

CCILC was founded in 1991 by Mrs. Lorraine Culbertson (Mrs. C) and she served as the first Executive Director of Camden City Independent Living Center. Born and raised in Camden, Mrs. C graduated from Camden High School in 1955. She received a degree in Criminal Justice from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1975. Throughout her life, Mrs. C found time to teach, work with prison inmates, and sell real estate. However, her work at CCILC was perhaps her greatest achievement.

Mrs C is probably most remembered for her work with Camden's disabled youth during the holidays. That's when she made sure that each child received a minimum of 6 gifts for Christmas through Joys of Toys for Rae's Kids.  Her work was  inspirational and as a result of her efforts to assist the Camden City disabled community, she was recognized by President Bill Clinton for outstanding volunteer work.
