CCILC was founded in 1991 by Mrs. Lorraine Culbertson (Mrs. C) and she served as the first Executive Director of Camden City Independent Living Center. Born and raised in Camden, Mrs. C graduated from Camden High School in 1955. She received a degree in Criminal Justice from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1975. Throughout her life, Mrs. C found time to teach, work with prison inmates, and sell real estate. However, her work at CCILC was perhaps her greatest achievement.
Mrs C is probably most remembered for her work with Camden's disabled youth during the holidays. That's when she made sure that each child received a minimum of 6 gifts for Christmas through Joys of Toys for Rae's Kids. Her work was inspirational and as a result of her efforts to assist the Camden City disabled community, she was recognized by President Bill Clinton for outstanding volunteer work. |
